HOPE for the CURE

Hope for the Cure

On Saturday, September 13th, 2008, Recreation ATL (formerly Southern Athletic Club) in Lilburn hosted a Hope for a Cure racquetball event for women. There were over 35 women who competed in this fun one-day shootout, as well as many spectators for the event. Players came from all over the Georgia -- from Macon, Dalton, and Kennesaw, as well as Alabama and Tennessee. We even recruited a “would be spectator” to play and she was happy she did. Women of all skill levels from Beginner to Open participated in the round robin format.

In the tradition of the good old days, each player received a goody bag filled with breast cancer prevention/education material, notepads, samples, pens, candy and a pink Wilson racquetball (thanks to Atlanta Oncology) All the matches were self-refereed with some Team Wilson players helping with the C/D matches. There was plenty of playing time as well as socializing. Team Wilson conducted a “Racquetball 101” clinic at midday, which focused on the rules and proper swing mechanics. Thanks to Larry, Frank, Nigel, Tony, Mike, Byron, and Teddy for volunteering their time and talent to the event.

Eagles Landing packed another fantastic lunch, complete with banana pudding from the generous support of Ian Mullings and company. Tim from New Jewelers “wowed” us with his beautiful racquetball & pearl pendants for each division winner. There were plenty of door prizes too – no one left empty handed.  Congratulations to all of the winners:

C/D:  Alexis Ross      B: Stephanie Guthrie     A: Janice Kennedy    Open: Lynn Fonseca

A special thank you goes to Roger Luque, Lonnie Laughman, and Louis Borrero for running the matches on time and keeping everyone happy and fed.  The most exciting news was that we raised over $700.00 for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, due to the generous donations from the players, spectators and our sponsors. Thank you for helping us in our fight against breast cancer and for your continued support of women’s racquetball here in Georgia.  For more information about women’s racquetball events please email Lynn at rballmomga@gmail.com.

 With much gratitude,

Lynn Fonseca, Vicki Luque, Paula Carter and Tara Borrero

Women's Day at Southern Athletic Club

It was Saturday, January 19th and the weather report looked ominous.  "Rain and snow with possible accumulation".   This was the day of the "January Jam', a ladies-only racquetball shoot-out to be held at Southern Athletic Club in Lilburn, GA.  It began as an idea for women in the metro Atlanta  area to gather for a fun day of competition and prizes and blossomed into an event attracting women players from Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama.  WIth Atlanta weather being fickle as it is, we decided to go ahead with the day of round-robin play and let the players decide if it was safe enough to travel from their respective locations.  The result was 25 out of the 26 registered players attending amid a day of beautiful snowfall and virtually no problems commuting. These women really wanted to play racquetball!

The "Jam" consisted of 5 levels of play from Open to Novice.  As it was all round-robin singles everyone had plenty of playing time.  We had a great catered lunch courtesy of Eagles Landing in Lawrenceville, and jewelry for prizes courtesy of New Jewelers in Norcross.  There were cash and/or jewelry prizes awarded for 1st and 2nd places and lots of doorprizes from Ektelon and SAC.

We played women we had never met before and new friendships were formed.  As a side note all matches were self-refereed and went smoothly.  We had a novice player who had only been on the racquetball court 3 or 4 times.  She loved it .Though she didn't win she flashed a huge smile as she saw snow for the first time and displayed her doorprize in the falling snow!  The open division was tough with 7 players finishing within just a few total points of each other.

We would like to thank the following folks for their support as well:  Ric Crosby of SAC, Roger Luque,  Lynn Fonseca, and Ektelon.  If your are not already on our email list, please send your email address to Vicki Luque at vlaq@comcast.net for announcements and entry forms to the next event.
