Hope for the Cure
On Saturday, September 13th, 2008, Recreation ATL (formerly Southern Athletic Club) in Lilburn hosted a Hope for a Cure racquetball event for women. There were over 35 women who competed in this fun one-day shootout, as well as many spectators for the event. Players came from all over the Georgia -- from Macon, Dalton, and Kennesaw, as well as Alabama and Tennessee. We even recruited a “would be spectator” to play and she was happy she did. Women of all skill levels from Beginner to Open participated in the round robin format.
In the tradition of the good old days, each player received a goody bag filled with breast cancer prevention/education material, notepads, samples, pens, candy and a pink Wilson racquetball (thanks to Atlanta Oncology) All the matches were self-refereed with some Team Wilson players helping with the C/D matches. There was plenty of playing time as well as socializing. Team Wilson conducted a “Racquetball 101” clinic at midday, which focused on the rules and proper swing mechanics. Thanks to Larry, Frank, Nigel, Tony, Mike, Byron, and Teddy for volunteering their time and talent to the event.
Eagles Landing packed another fantastic lunch, complete with banana pudding from the generous support of Ian Mullings and company. Tim from New Jewelers “wowed” us with his beautiful racquetball & pearl pendants for each division winner. There were plenty of door prizes too – no one left empty handed. Congratulations to all of the winners:
C/D: Alexis Ross B: Stephanie Guthrie A: Janice Kennedy Open: Lynn Fonseca
A special thank you goes to Roger Luque, Lonnie Laughman, and Louis Borrero for running the matches on time and keeping everyone happy and fed. The most exciting news was that we raised over $700.00 for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, due to the generous donations from the players, spectators and our sponsors. Thank you for helping us in our fight against breast cancer and for your continued support of women’s racquetball here in Georgia. With much gratitude,
